COD Fraud for Indian Sellers: Fake Payment Screenshots and Refused Deliveries

COD fraud affects Instagram and WhatsApp sellers in two distinct ways. The first is fake payment screenshots — a buyer sends a screenshot of a UPI payment that was never actually made (or sends an old screenshot from a different transaction) and asks you to ship immediately. By the time you discover the fraud, the parcel is already dispatched.
The second type is deliberate COD abandonment — a buyer places a COD order with no intention of paying, and simply refuses delivery when the courier arrives. Each refused delivery costs you both the outward and return courier charge.
To protect against fake screenshots: never ship until you verify the UTR (UPI Transaction Reference) number in your own bank account or UPI app. Open PhonePe, GPay, your bank app, or BHIM, go to transaction history, and check that the exact UTR, amount, and date match. If the UTR does not appear in your history, the payment was not made.
