UPI UTR Fraud: How Fake Screenshots Fool Indian Sellers and How to Stop It
Every UPI transaction generates a unique UTR (Unique Transaction Reference) — a 12-digit reference number. A real payment screenshot contains a real UTR that corresponds to an actual bank transfer.
Fraudsters use two main techniques: editing a real screenshot to change the amount or your name (Photoshop fraud), and reusing a genuine old screenshot from a previous order (duplicate UTR fraud).
Edited screenshots are harder to catch without a payment gateway. Duplicate UTR fraud — where the same transaction reference is submitted twice — is fully preventable if you log and check UTRs.
The defence: log every UTR number when you record a payment, and before confirming each new payment, check whether that UTR has already been used for a previous order. If it has, the payment is fraudulent.
